Unarmed teachers are put in the impossible position of having to place themselves between the threat and their students. Without the ability to defend themselves, you are creating soft targets and more victims. Security guards cannot be everywhere at once. Arm teachers to be able to protect themselves and students until help arrives.
Having a firearm within reach could accidentally lead to more violence. There have been cases where students, out of curiosity or malice, managed to get hold of an adult's firearm with tragic results. Additionally, teachers are trained to educate, not to handle security situations. They might not react appropriately under stress, leading to more harm than good.

You are correct but by not giving the option, you force them to be victims with no ability to protect themselves or anyone else. We’re not asking them to be security guards. We’re giving them a way to defend themselves against an active shooter.
