okay i'm long winded on this one because I deeply feel that the education system failed me despite being moderately intelligent. it took years after graduation to realize that I like learning, and years more to determine what i (as not professional at all on this topic) believe to be worth investigating.
Northern Nevada has long been a very blue collar industry, all of NV has, but in recent years tech companies from Apple to Tesla have planted their roots but there's been no white collar growth. We have foreigner from outside our nation, transplants from CA and TX, and because of the wealth disparity those higher debt locations have brought we're seeing an absurd spike in our real estate.
I firmly believe that grades k-10 should emphasize traditional gen ed studies. 11th-12th should either be geared towards trades, employment skills, adulting (cooking, finances, taxes, etc) for those who seek to graduate and go into blue collar work like manufacturing, operations\logistics, radiology, and other traditionally Associate's degree jobs OR 11th and 12th should be the Gen Ed requirements expected before pursuing a BA, BS, etc.
regardless of path, the moment a student is 16 they get paid internship in a field to learn employment skills either in a relevant field of interest or education. Uni students could then seek sponsorship from the mentoring employer that upon graduation and\or probationary period can have a full time, full salary, paying wage in their major.
Controversially I believe school years should be year round with 40 weeks dedicated to school, 2 weeks at ends of semesters, and 1 week halfway through each quarter. classes should be 5 days a week, 8 hours with 2 half hour breaks and one full hour lunch, home room is the only room and teachers should travel from home room to home room, students shouldn't be stressed about getting place to place. Studies have provent that consistency of peers in smaller population cities have better comradery within school.
homework and projects outside of the school premises will be abolished. once a child is home, theyre with family or friends getting rest. Adults don't take their work with them, neither should children.
