It’s important to know where we come from and the historical segregation and racism in our country to truly understand how our society today inadvertently disadvantages minorities. People can’t be true allies for change if the don’t really understand the history. We all deserve to know all the facts before deciding our stance. I am an educated person from Wisconsin and after my K-12 education (in the year 2000) I truly thought that racism was a historical issue and not a current one.
It took moving to Tennessee and starting to have conversations with more diverse people for me to realize it wasn’t. It took me seeking out books to educate myself to learn about the historical segregation in the U.S.
